The Maternal, Child and Family Health research theme includes practioners and researchers from a number of different disciplines within healthcare, spanning midwives, psychologists, sociologists and epidemiologists. The theme aims to inform policy internationally, targeting areas such as mental health and social marginalisation.

<h2>Who we are</h2> <p>Midwives, nurses, psychologists, sociologists and epidemiologists.</p> <h2>What do we do and why</h2> <p>We undertake applied Health Research to inform national and international policy and practice in maternal, child and family healthcare.</p> <h2>Our work</h2> <ul> <li>Understanding and improving mental health and wellbeing in women and men in pregnancy and the postnatal period</li> <li>Reducing trauma and feeling unwell in childbearing women</li> <li>Understanding and helping with chronic pelvic pain</li> <li>Improving global women&rsquo;s health</li> <li>Increasing positive health behaviours and self-management in women with long-term conditions, who are pregnant and receiving post-natal care</li> <li>Improving communication between children and young people with long-term conditions, parents and professionals</li> <li>Understanding the ways children, young people, families/carers and professionals share long-term condition management</li> <li>Development and evaluation of complex, user-led interventions (e.g. web and smartphone apps) to promote optimum health-care experiences for families, and optimum outcomes for patients.</li> <li>User involvement and ethics in health-care research. Spirituality and quality of life in individuals with long term conditions</li> <li>Meaning-making in life-limiting conditions and palliative care</li> <li>Reducing diversity, vulnerability and marginalisation</li> <li>Family focussed care across the life-course in long-term conditions</li> <li>Understanding parent-professional collaboration in long-term childhood condition management</li> <li>Participation in healthcare consultations</li> </ul> <h2>How do we do our research?</h2> <p>We synthesise evidence and undertake primary research using mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative methods. We work closely with the NHS, are committed to co-production of research with users and representatives of public, private, voluntary and community organisations. We believe that health and social care should be inclusive, a belief that underpins everything we do.</p>
