Summary

This 4-year programme is designed to provide international candidates with a unique opportunity to gain specialist research skills, develop a research area and acquire research knowledge before commencing their individual PhD project.
Successful candidates will follow one of two pathways, each providing a bespoke programme to meet the needs of the individual.

Full description

Candidates registered on the Medicine, Health & Human Disease programme will be members of one of two International PhD Academies, determined by their chosen area of research. Details of these pathways are shown below:

International PhD Academy: Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death and disability in the UK and across the world. Diabetes tends to exacerbate cardiovascular disease meaning we are less able to treat it. This is increasingly a problem in our modern society where we have more of a tendency to do less exercise and to over-consume, and so we need to urgently address this through our research.

At the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM) we are committed to understanding the mechanisms of cardiovascular and metabolic disease and in developing new strategies for therapeutic intervention. Part of our core mission is to use our expertise to nurture a new generation of scientists and clinicians who think differently, collaborate effectively and go on to be instrumental in transforming our understanding and contributing to the development of new treatments. More details about this pathway can be found on our International PhD Academy: Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease website.

International PhD Academy: Medical Research

At the Leeds Institute of Medical Research (LIMR) at St. James's our vision is to impact locally, nationally and globally on biomedical and clinical research with a primary emphasis on health outcomes. We bring together scientists and clinicians to focus collaboratively on biomedical research and its translation to the benefit of patients. We investigate the causes and medical treatment of disease at the level of molecules, cells, patients and populations. Our medical research interests include the genetics, genomics and cell biology of disease, haematology and immunology, cancer research (from basic biology through to clinical trials and outcomes research), gastroenterology, surgery and pathology and the use and integration of big data sets into these problems. We train the next generation of scientists through state-of-the-art research-led teaching. More details about this pathway can be found on our International PhD Academy: Medical Research website.

Medicine, Health & Human Disease Programme Structure

The first year combines taught modules and two mini research projects to provide you with in-depth specialist scientific knowledge and research skills relevant to your PhD. The PhD research project will occupy years 2-4. The design of the 4-year PhD programme allows the creation of a personalised programme for each student with complementary modules chosen to meet your specific development needs relevant not only to your PhD but your future career and employability.

A PhD with us offers you much more than just academic excellence. Our size and diversity mean we can offer you a unique experience which combines our research-based curriculum with a range of opportunities to give you the knowledge, skills and experience to prepare for your future.

You will be part of a prestigious, research-intensive Russell Group university. Research and teaching expertise at Leeds places us alongside other outstanding Universities across the globe. Here, you will have an exceptional student experience.
