<p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{42}" paraid="1992946108">Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) conducts world-leading research into the history, cultures and societies of Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa and Asia. </p> <p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{56}" paraid="1011589548">Our research community in SPLAS – one of the largest in the UK – works across a variety of disciplines including literature, film, visual culture, music, performing arts, translation, history, popular and digital cultures, and social and political science.  </p> <p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{82}" paraid="1015422559">In particular we have research strengths in the areas of environmental humanities, digital humanities, the study of nations and nationalisms, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, decoloniality and indigeneity, immigration and diaspora, religion, and urban studies. We also conduct research into a number of minority languages and associated cultures, including Catalan, Galician and Dzubukuá-Kipeá/Kariri-Xocó (Brazil). </p> <p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{102}" paraid="4720901">Members of the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies research team conduct individual as well as collaborative, and interdisciplinary research through research centres and projects, in particular the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/centres-groups/doc/centre-history-ibero-america-chia" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Centre for the History of Ibero-America (CHIA)</a>, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/network-hispanic-lusophone-cultural-studies" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Network for Hispanic and Lusophone Cultural Studies (HLCS)</a>, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/centre-world-cinemas-digital-cultures" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Centre for World Cinemas and Digital Cultures (CWCDC)</a>, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/centre-world-literatures-0" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Centre for World Literatures (CWL)</a>, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/centre-translation-studies-research" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Centre for Translation Studies (CTS)</a>, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/centres-groups/doc/european-popular-musics" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">European Popular Musics</a> research group, the <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/international-writers-leeds" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">International Writers at Leeds (IWAL)</a> lecture series, the <a href="https://celce.leeds.ac.uk/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Centre for Endangered Languages, Cultures and Ecosystems (CELCE)</a> and the <a href="https://lucas.leeds.ac.uk/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Leeds University Centre for African Studies (LUCAS)</a>. </p> <p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{183}" paraid="1720624258">We supervise masters by research (MAR) and doctoral (PhD) researchers working on a wide range of topics relating to our areas of expertise. While studying with us you will undertake research training offered by the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and the University, as you write a thesis which is examined by viva at the end of your period of study. Full-time and part-time study options are available.? </p> <p paraeid="{e555bb77-fea0-43e6-aa13-5656aa2bba71}{212}" paraid="155846929">When completing the online application for study please select Languages, Cultures and Societies as the programme for all subject areas offered by the School.
