Our expertise covers fieldwork, geochemical and palaeontological laboratory work, and computer modelling of palaeoclimate, ice sheets and biogeochemical cycles to understand ancient organisms, climates and environments, and how these relate to the modern-day. Our work extends across the full span of Earth History from the Precambrian to the Quaternary.

We have the capacity to supervise a wide range of PhD projects involving a range of palaeontological studies and palaeo-environmental reconstruction throughout Earth’s history.

Candidates will benefit from our excellent facilities, our collegiate and supportive research culture and our wide collaborative network.

Areas of particular expertise include:

Evolution of ocean and atmosphere chemistry

Carbonate based element and stable isotope environmental proxies

Metal and radionuclide mobility and bioavailability

Geochemical box modelling

The cycles of phosphorus, iron, sulfur and carbon in modern and ancient environments

Sedimentary geochemistry

Mineral interfaces and interfacial processes

Mass extinctions

Proxies for ocean oxygenation

Chemosynthetic communities

Organic geochemistry

Useful links and further reading:

Research degrees within the School of Earth and Environment

Earth Surface Science Institute

Palaeo@Leeds

School of Earth and Environment, Research and Innovation

Leeds Doctoral College

Our Doctoral College supports you throughout your postgraduate research journey.
