A fully funded PhD studentship is available in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds for the 2026/27 academic year. This position is open to UK applicants and includes full tuition fees, a UKRI-level living stipend, and additional funding to support research training. The project is funded through the EPSRC–University Scholarship scheme in collaboration with BP-Castrol.<br /> <br /> This PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to explore how lubricants perform in electrified systems such as electric vehicle drivetrains and wind turbine gearboxes. Electrification introduces electrical stresses into lubricated systems, which in-turn can cause lubricant degradation, electrical discharge events, and the subsequent degradation of contacting surfaces. Despite growing industrial importance, the complex interactions between electrical activity, lubricant chemistry, and surface damage are still not fully understood.<br /> <br /> The project is based within the Institute of Functional Surfaces, School of Mechanical Engineering, which hosts internationally recognised expertise in tribology, surface engineering, and lubricant research. The successful candidate will work closely with BP-Castrol, gaining experience and industrial insight through collaboration, technical mentoring, and secondment opportunities.
<p style="text-align:justify; margin-bottom:11px">The transition towards electrified systems in automotive and energy sector applications introduces complex electro-tribological conditions that fundamentally change how lubricants and surfaces interact. Wide-ranging voltages, high-frequency alternating fields and stray currents can alter surface chemistry and penetrate lubricant films, triggering dielectric breakdown, accelerated surface wear, and lubricant contamination.</p> <p>This project aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of how electrical stresses lead to changes in lubricant chemistry and surface protection under application-relevant conditions.</p> <p>The project will involve:</p> <ul> <li>Experimental investigation of lubricated contacts operating under electrified conditions;</li> <li>Analysis of lubricant composition changes resulting from degradation and contamination;</li> <li>Characterisation of protective surface layers and failure mechanisms;</li> <li>Development of predictive framework to link electrical stress, lubricant behaviour, and wear progression.</li> </ul> <p style="margin-bottom:11px">The successful candidate will gain experience in advanced tribological testing, lubricant analysis, electrochemical methods, and surface characterisation techniques. The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
