For 2026 entry, we're offering 1 talented researcher the opportunity to secure funding for a postgraduate research and join our thriving community of leading researchers within the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

These competitive EPSRC Faculty Doctoral Landscape Awards offer the award of fees, together with a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £20,780 for academic session 2025/26) for 3.5 years. Training and support will also be provided.

This opportunity is open to UK applicants only. All candidates will be placed into the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership Studentship Competition and selection is based on academic merit.

Proteins are the molecular machines that perform a majority of cellular functions. They work by interacting with one another in complex and constantly changing ways, controlling processes such as cell division, signalling, and responses to medicines. Understanding how these protein interactions form and change over time is a major challenge in modern science, but one that is crucial for advances in healthcare and biotechnology, including understanding disease mechanisms, such as in cancer.

This PhD project will develop new chemical and analytical tools to study protein interactions using crosslinking mass spectrometry, a powerful technique that captures proteins interactions and identifies them using advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation. Current methods are limited in the types of interactions that can be captured. In this project, you will design new chemical reagents that overcome these limitations, allowing protein interactions to be studied with greater detail and with time control, including directly inside living cells. We aim to use this toolkit to study how cancer cells rapidly rewire their interactions in response to drug treatment.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and will suit students from backgrounds in chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry or related disciplines. Full training will be provided, and no prior experience of mass spectrometry is required.

You will gain skills in chemical synthesis, analytical measurement, data analysis, and collaborative research, working in a supportive and inclusive research environment.

Applications will be considered after the closing date of 27 March 2026. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact supervisors for an informal discussion before making a formal application. We also advise that you apply at the earliest opportunity as the application and selection process may close early, should we receive a sufficient number of applications or that a suitable candidate is appointed.
