The role of Food Bioactives on Gut Barrier Function and Healthy Aging

Applications are invited in the field of Food Bioactives and Human Health to investigate the role of food bioactive compounds in modulating gut permeability and their implications for aging and chronic disease. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about nutrition science, molecular biology and the role of diet in disease prevention and health promotion. <br /> <br /> The integrity of the gut barrier is increasingly recognized as a key factor in maintaining health and preventing age-related diseases. This project will explore how specific bioactive compounds—such as polyphenols, peptides, and other phytochemicals—affect gut permeability and contribute to systemic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegeneration.

<p>The research objectives include the following:</p> <ul> <li>Identification and characterisation of bioactive compounds in selected sources, typically foods but also by products rich in target bioactives such as specific polyphenols or other phytochemicals. </li> <li>In vitro mechanistic research to investigate effects of bioactives on gut epithelial integrity and inflammaton  </li> <li>Exploration of molecular mechanisms linking gut permeability to inflammation and aging </li> <li>Design/proof of concept for dietary inverventions to improve gut barrier function and to support healthy aging  </li> </ul>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline.

For start dates from September 2026, the minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study in the School of Food Science and Nutrition is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
