Procurement of infrastructure projects

Procurement of infrastructure entails award, entry into and management of a contract for delivery of infrastructure projects. In many cases, activities leading to award of a contract are the most crucial aspects of procurement because they influence the rest of procurement. Also, the environment within which procurement is undertaken plays a significant part in success or failure of procurement. Too often in the construction industry in many countries, procurement is inefficiently and/or ineffectively managed and this leads to sub-par performance.<br /> <br /> In this area of research, we are interested in exploring aspects that can lead away from sub-par performance to desired futures.<br /> <br /> Some projects in this area of research may focus on general aspects of procurement in the construction industry and explore ideas like evaluation and design/improvement of frameworks for construction procurement in specified countries and rethinking the scope of procurement in construction projects. Other projects in this area of research may focus on NEC4 family of contracts with emphasis on ideas like developing and defining Climate Change Requirements for Option X29 of NEC4, designing strategies for operationalisation of Option X29 of NEC4 and developing strategies to increase the diffusion of NEC4 in sectors and industries in specified countries. Moreover, other projects may focus on developing ideas to enhance NEC4 family of contracts by designing new options and clauses to effectively manage contemporary and emerging issues in the construction industry.<br /> <br /> It is envisaged that projects in this area of research will utilise relevant theories/frameworks such as multicriteria decision making, performance measurement, institutional theory, systems analysis and design science/theory, social value and innovation theory. The breadth of the area of research allows for researchers with backgrounds in architecture, civil engineering or other built environment subjects to contribute to creation of new knowledge in this area. The breadth of the area of research also calls for implementation of relevant methodologies including experiments, surveys, available data studies, ethnography, etc. as appropriate.<br /> <br /> I encourage prospective postgraduate researchers in this area of research to customise their research ideas/proposal by following their interest in particular and relevant research questions and/or techniques.<br />

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
