<h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Summary</h2>

We invite applications for a PhD project focused on the development of quantum dot (QD) biosensors. This experimental project will provide comprehensive training in the synthesis of quantum dots and nanoparticles, surface functionalisation techniques, and the evaluation of biosensor performance. Candidates will gain hands-on experience in assessing key parameters such as minimum detection limits, specificity, and reproducibility.<br /> <br /> Quantum dots are semiconductor nanoparticles that exhibit unique fluorescent properties, making them ideal for biosensing applications. Traditionally, many quantum dots have been cadmium-based, but due to toxicity concerns, this project will focus on developing cadmium-free quantum dots. These Cd-free QDs will be synthesised and incorporated into biosensors, leveraging their fluorescence to detect biological targets with high sensitivity and specificity.<br /> <br /> The project will explore the incorporation of QDs into hydrogels and polymer film matrices, aiming to enhance the functionality and application range of these biosensors. Throughout the PhD, students will develop a diverse skill set, including advanced laboratory techniques, data analysis, and critical problem-solving abilities.<br /> <br /> The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leeds is renowned for its research excellence and offers state-of-the-art facilities. Students will have access to advanced instrumentation, including high-resolution electron microscopes, spectrometers, and specialised synthesis equipment. The school provides a collaborative and supportive research environment, fostering innovation and professional growth. Additionally, this project benefits from an international collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology, providing opportunities for cross-institutional research and knowledge exchange.<br /> <br /> Applicants should have a strong background in physics, chemistry, or a related discipline. Prior experience in nanomaterials or biosensors is advantageous but not essential. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
