In many astrophysical and geophysical situations of interest, turbulent interactions take place within a thin layer of stably stratified fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. Examples of such situations may include the outer layers of exoplanets or the interiors of stars - for example the solar tachocline.<br /> <br /> Such dynamics may be modelled using the thin-shell MHD equations where a reduced model system is derived asymptotically. The properties of these equations has only recently begun to be investigated. This project is to derive basic properties of waves, instabilities and turbulence in such a system and compare with more complicated models. This research is to be carried out in the Astrophysical and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics research group, which is one of the largest such research groups in the world.

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
