More than 10% of the UK population aged over 45 have hip osteoarthritis and there are nearly 100,000 total hip replacement (THR) surgeries performed every year. The aging population, along with growing cohorts of both more active and more obese patients, are all pushing the demands placed on hip replacements: devices need to last for longer and withstand higher and more adverse loading than ever before. There is already evidence that these increasing requirements are not being met, with the rising numbers of patients requiring revision surgery. Differences in loading and kinematics in patients who are more active, or living with obesity may affect the selection and surgical positioning of the implant, however there is currently limited biomechanical evidence on what would be optimal for different patient cohorts.

<h5>Aim and objectives:&nbsp;</h5> <p>The aim of this PhD project is develop biomechanical evidence on patients who are at risk of suboptimal THR outcomes that can be used to inform surgical decision making. The specific technical and patient focus can be shaped by the candidate depending on their expertise; the work will utilise world-leading facilities in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (IMBE) and Chapel Allerton Hospital (CAH) including:&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>In vivo measurement</strong> of patients including both 3D imaging (MRI) and gait analysis using facilities at CAH to identify anatomical and biomechanical characteristic of at-risk patients.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>In vitro laboratory</strong> testing of total hip replacements using unique hip simulators, housed in the largest academic joint replacement simulation facility in the world, to examine the performance of THRs under biomechanical inputs representative of different patients.</p> <p><strong>In silico modelling</strong>, including the use of advanced finite element methods to examine the effects of a wider range of load/kinematic scenarios on the implant performance.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Surface and material analysis of THR components</strong> retrieved at revision surgery using bespoke metrology methods to identify locations and causes of damage occurring clinically.&nbsp;</p> <p>The student will develop a unique set of experimental and computation skills applicable to the examination of a range of medical devices. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

A degree in biological sciences, dentistry, medicine, midwifery, nursing, psychology or a good honours degree (2:1 or above) in a subject relevant to the research topic. A Masters degree is desirable but not essential.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language is sufficient to meet the specific demands of their study. The Faculty of Medicine and Health minimum requirements in IELTS and TOEFL tests for PhD, MSc, MPhil, MD are: &bull; British Council IELTS - score of 6.5 overall, with no element less than 6.0 &bull; TOEFL iBT - overall score of 92 with the listening and reading element no less than 21, writing element no less than 22 and the speaking element no less than 23.

<h2 class="heading">Funding on offer</h2>

<p>The University of Leeds is providing generous matched funding, supplementing the NIHR Leeds BRC award, to allow us to appoint one further non-clinical PhD Fellow who can select from 18 BRC related projects. Each PhD will be registered at the University of Leeds and we welcome applications from individuals, irrespective of their background, who can evidence great potential and commitment.</p> <p>The&nbsp;scholarship will provide academic&nbsp;fees at the UK rate, as well as a&nbsp;stipend of &pound;18,622 (based on the 2023/24 stipend rate, pro-rata for part time study) for up to three years (full time study, five years part time) and is available for&nbsp;UK applicants&nbsp;only. Due to limited funding we can only consider applicants eligible to pay academic fees at the UK fee rate.</p>
