Visualising Protein Structure and Dynamics: Developing new tools for experimental approaches to molecular dynamics

In this PhD project you will develop and apply novel methods that enable the observation of protein dynamics, from the molecular to cellular level. This will contribute to our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that underlie protein stability, drive biological processes and contribute to the development of disease. <br /> <br /> Our group uses primarily time-resolved X-ray crystallography, imaging and spectroscopy to probe functionally relevant changes in biomolecular structure. Most recently we have used these techniques to investigate the molecular basis of cataract formation, focusing on UV induced structural changes and REDOX chemistry in the eye lens. This model system will form the basis of methods development including utilising novel data collection strategies for time-resolved X-ray crystallography and X-ray phase contrast imaging.<br /> <br /> This project would suit a student interested in structural biology, chemistry or physics and willing to learn about experimental approaches to visualising protein dynamics.<br />

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
