<h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Summary</h2>

The transportation of people and goods via railways offers environmental benefits in comparison to other transport modes such as road and air. However, railways depend upon the high precision construction and maintenance of track infrastructure. This construction and maintenance is carbon intensive and reduces the environmental benefits of rail over it&rsquo;s lifespan.<br /> <br /> The most common types of railway track are ballasted and concrete slab tracks. Concrete slab tracks have become popular in recent years particularly on high speed lines, and are often designed to a relatively high factor of safety. Therefore if their design can be optimised there is the potential to reduce both manufacturing costs and carbon emissions.<br /> <br /> This project will perform a structural analysis of several of the most common railway concrete slab track systems. The key design parameters such as slab dimensions and concrete material properties will be varied to optimise the slab track structure for cost and sustainability. The ultimate aim is to develop new cutting-edge slab track designs that reduce the environmental impact of railway track construction.<br /> <br /> The project will focus on numerical simulation, using a combination of commercial and in-house structural analysis software. Due to the novelty of the research and model development, there is the opportunity to write world-leading, international journal papers on the subject. Considering the international nature of the research, candidates will be expected to attend international conferences if required.<br />

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
