Wearable Energy Harvester from Human Gait

The value of the global wearable electronics market is expected to exceed £6.4 ($8) billion in 2018 with more than 130 million units manufactured globally. In this growing market one of the main challenges is to provide enough energy for these electronic devices to run over a reasonable amount of time without making the battery too large or the device too bulky. This is driving research into ambient power scavenging, especially harvesting energy from human movement. Among other solutions, such as supercapacitor-based energy storage, wireless power transfer and high-density chemical batteries, wearable energy harvesting generators are the most attractive option as they provide an inexhaustible replacements for batteries for low power wearable electronic devices. The project aims to develop a portable and wearable self-powered systems with sensing functions for vital sign monitoring.

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is an IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
