<h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Summary</h2>

The White Rose College of Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH) is a Doctoral Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. WRoCAH will be offering at least 55 Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) PhD studentships starting in October 2025. The awards will be awarded through open competition across the three institutions and will be for student-led project applications. Collaborative Doctoral Awards, where a researcher works closely with a non-academic partner organisation, will also be available and these will be advertised in early 2025.

<h2 class="heading hide-accessible"Full description</h2>

<p><strong>Closing date for open competition applications 17:00 GMT Wednesday 22 January 2025</strong></p> <p>Applications are welcome for any school or department at the University where the research falls within the <a href="https://ahrc.ukri.org/funding/research/subjectcoverage/ahrc-disciplines/" target="_blank">remit</a> of the AHRC. If you have any doubts about whether your research falls within the remit, please talk to your prospective supervisor.</p> <p>Detailed competition information can be found on the <a href="https://wrocah.ac.uk/funding/prospective-students/" target="_blank">White Rose College of Arts and Humanities website</a>.</p> <p>The award provides:</p> <ul> <li>Full fees</li> <li>A maintenance grant (£19,237 in Session 2024/25 for full-time study, part-time will be pro-rata at 60%). This amount increases per annum in line with the Research Council UK rate</li> <li>Please be aware that any expenses related to the relocation of international students to the UK (visa, insurance, NHS fees, flights, etc) would be their responsibility and is not covered by this award.</li> </ul> <p>EU students are eligible to apply but will be classified as international unless they meet criteria to be assessed as UK fee payers.</p> <p>WRoCAH is committed to increasing the diversity of the student cohort. For Session 2025 they are seeking to allocate a minimum of two studentships for Black British applicants as this group are currently significantly underrepresented among WRoCAH PGRs. <h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Faculty information</h2>

<p><em>Please note that Schools in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures and the Faculty of Social Sciences have set an internal deadline of 17:00 (UK time) on 8th of January 2025 for receiving applications for a place of study related to the WRoCAH Studentship. This is to ensure that WRoCAH applicants make contact with a potential supervisor and submit their application for a study place in sufficient time to be considered for the WRoCAH competition. We will continue to accept study applications from potential WRoCAH candidates after the 8th January, but will be less likely to be able to process the applications through to the offer stage or to advise candidates on their WRoCAH submission following that date.</em></p>

<h2 class="heading">How to apply</h2>

<p>You can make only one application for funding through the open competition for a student-led project. You must have applied for a place of study and may only apply for funding at one of Leeds, Sheffield or York. </p> <p><strong>Stage 1</strong> <br /> First of all apply for a research programme of study by completing the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130206/applying/91/applying_for_research_degrees" target="_blank">application form</a></p> <p>In order to be considered for the scholarship you must submit all the required supporting documents for your application for study*. Any study applications that are not accompanied by the documents requested by the scholarship deadline will not be considered for the award.<br /> Please note that an unsuccessful application for this scholarship does not exclude you from applying for other research study opportunities or scholarships offered by the University of Leeds.</p> <p>*The supporting documents you need to provide with your study application are listed on website for the School/Faculty in which you are applying to study.</p> <p><strong>Stage 2</strong><br /> Once you are in receipt of your 9 digit Student Application ID complete the WRoCAH funding <a href="https://wrocah.ac.uk/funding/prospective-students/2025-wrocah-ahrc-open-competition-studentships/" target="_blank">application form</a>.</p> <p><em>As an international research-intensive university, we welcome students from all walks of life and from across the world. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher and applicants for AHRC funding should normally have, or be studying for, a Master’s degree or similar postgraduate qualification. Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study is IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. If the School/Faculty to which you have applied has a higher English language entry requirement, you must meet this higher requirement. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Please note that some schools and faculties have a higher requirement. The minimum English language requirements for Schools in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures is IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent.
