<h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Summary</h2>

The School of History invites prospective postgraduate researchers who wish to study for a PhD commencing in the academic year 2025/26 to apply for the School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship. <br /> <br /> One full scholarship is available covering Home fees (GBP 5,006 in 2025/26) plus a maintenance stipend (currently GBP 20,780 in 2025/26). Please note that the successful candidate would be required to pay the difference between the Home fee rate and the International fee rate.<br /> <br /> The scholarship is open to prospective postgraduate researchers from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups from low-income and middle income countries. This fully funded PhD place provides an exciting opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in historical studies.<br /> <br /> The award is open to full-time candidates who have been offered a place on a PhD degree at the School of History. We especially welcome applications that connect to the School's research interests in health histories, war and conflict, politics, diplomacy and international relations, empires and their aftermaths, women, gender and sexualities, and public histories.

<h2 class="heading hide-accessible"Full description</h2>

<p><u><strong>Information about the Award </strong></u></p> <ul> <li>We are offering one full PhD scholarship in the School of History for international candidates, covering a maintenance grant matching the UKRI maintenance stipend (currently £20,780 in 2025/26) and UK tuition fees.</li> <li>Note that the successful international candidate will be required to pay the different between the UK tuiition fee rate (£5,006 in 2025/26) and the international fee rate each year. The fee difference in 2025/26 is calculated at £19,494. Please note that this is subject to change in future years. </li> <li>The award will cover tuition fees at the Home rate for 3 years for full-time study, renewable subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> <li>The award will cover a UKRI-matched maintenance stipend for 3.5 years for full-time study, renewable subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> </ul> <p><u><strong>Other Conditions</strong></u></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.</li> <li>Awards must be taken up by 1st February 2026.</li> <li>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship.</li> <li>Please be aware that any expenses related to the relocation of students to the UK (<a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/international-visas-immigration/doc/applying-student-visa">visa, medical insurance, the Immigration Healthcare Surcharge, flights, etc</a>) would be their responsibility and is not covered by this award.</li> </ul> <p><u><strong>Selection Process</strong></u></p> <ul> <li>The deadline to be considered for the School of History BAME PhD Scholarship is 17:00 (UK time) on <strong>31<sup>st</sup> October 2025</strong>.</li> <li>All scholarship applications will be considered after the deadline. Only complete applications will be considered.</li> <li>The final list of awards are based on academic merit and no other factors such as financial hardship are taken into account.</li> <li>Applicants will be e-mailed within 4 weeks of the deadline to confirm the outcome.</li> <li>Please note that whilst you may be successful in securing an academic offer for any project specifically linked to this funding opportunity, this does not mean that you have been successful in securing an offer of funding. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis.</li> </ul>

<h2 class="heading">How to apply</h2>

<p><u><strong>Stage 1</strong></u></p> <p>First, apply for a research place of study, through the <a href="https://studentservices.leeds.ac.uk/pls/banprod/bwskalog_uol.P_DispLoginNon">online application form</a>. Please state clearly that the funding you wish to be considered for is “The School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship”. You will be expected to meet our<a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/history-research-degrees/doc/apply-7"> eligibility criteria</a> for PHD candidates.</p> <p>In order to be considered for a Studentship you must submit all the required<a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/history-research-degrees/doc/apply-7"> supporting documents </a>for your application for PhD study.</p> <p>Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.</p> <p><u><strong>Stage 2</strong></u></p> <p>Apply for the School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship by completing the <a href="https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/school-of-history-bame-doctoral-scholarship-2025-26">Scholarship Application Form</a>. You must submit your scholarship application by <strong>17:00p.m. (UK time) on Friday 31<sup>st</sup> October 2025.</strong></p> <p><strong>Please be prepared to provide the below information within the scholarship application form:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Your personal details (full name, student ID, email address and fee status)</li> <li>Information about your proposed research, including:  your research title, the questions or hypotheses you will address, the methods and sources of data you wish to use, how your research relates to existing research and the contribution your research will make in your discipline, and your references/bibliography</li> <li>Explanation of why have you have chosen to study in this School and with your particular supervisors, how you plan to engage with the School's academic community, and what you will gain from being a member of the School </li> <li>Any publications, prizes, performances or other awards you have received</li> </ul> <p>If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the University's minimum English language requirements (below).</p> <p><em>As an international research-intensive university, we welcome students from all walks of life and from across the world. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study in the School of History is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
