School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship 2025

The School of History invites prospective postgraduate researchers who wish to study for a PhD commencing in the academic year 2025/26 to apply for the School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship. One full scholarship is available covering Home fees plus a maintenance stipend (currently GBP 19,237 in 2024/25). <br /> <br /> The scholarship is open to prospective postgraduate researchers from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups who are eligible for the Home/UK rate of tuition fees. This fully funded PhD place provides an exciting opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in historical studies.<br /> <br /> The award is open to full-time or part-time candidates (UK only) who have been offered a place on a PhD degree at the School of History. We especially welcome applications that connect to the School's research interests in health histories, war and conflict, politics, diplomacy and international relations, empires and their aftermaths, women, gender and sexualities, and public histories.

<p><u><strong>Information about the Award </strong></u></p> <ul> <li>We are offering one full or part-time PHD scholarship in the School of History for UK candidates, covering a maintenance grant matching the UKRI maintenance stipend (currently £19,237 in 2024/25) and UK tuition fees.</li> <li>The award will cover tuition fees for 3 years for full-time study, 5 years for part-time study, renewable subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> <li>The award will cover a UKRI-matched maintenance stipend for 3.5 years for full-time study, 5 years 10 months for part-time study, renewable subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> </ul> <p><u><strong>Other Conditions</strong></u></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.</li> <li>Awards must be taken up by 1st October 2025.</li> <li>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship.</li> <li>Please be aware that any expenses related to the relocation of students to the UK (<a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/international-visas-immigration/doc/applying-student-visa">visa, medical insurance, the Immigration Healthcare Surcharge, flights, etc</a>) would be their responsibility and is not covered by this award.</li> </ul> <p><u><strong>Deadlines</strong></u></p> <p>The deadline to be considered for the School of History BAME PhD Scholarship is 17:00 (UK time) on 22nd January 2025.</p> <p>However, before you can apply, you will need to have already secured your place on a course and have your 9 digit student identification number. Therefore, we advise you to apply for a place on the PhD at least 6 weeks before the scholarship deadline, and we also recommend that you should be in dialogue with potential supervisors prior to this to discuss your proposals. </p>

Please state clearly that the funding you wish to be considered for is “The School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship”. You will be expected to meet our<a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/history-research-degrees/doc/apply-7"> eligibility criteria</a> for PHD candidates.</p> <p>In order to be considered for a Studentship you must submit all the required<a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/history-research-degrees/doc/apply-7"> supporting documents </a>for your application for PhD study.</p> <p>Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.</p> <p><u><strong>Stage 2</strong></u></p> <p>Apply for the School of History BAME Doctoral Scholarship by completing the <a href="https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/school-of-history-bame-doctoral-scholarship-2025">Scholarship Application Form</a>. You must submit your scholarship application by <strong>17:00p.m. (UK time) on Wednesday 22^nd January 2025.</strong></p> <p><strong>Please be prepared to provide the below information within the scholarship application form:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Your personal details (full name, student ID, email address and fee status)</li> <li>Information about your proposed research, including:  your research title, the questions or hypotheses you will address, the methods and sources of data you wish to use, how your research relates to existing research and the contribution your research will make in your discipline, and your references/bibliography</li> <li>Explanation of why have you have chosen to study in this School and with your particular supervisors, how you plan to engage with the School's academic community, and what you will gain from being a member of the School </li> <li>Any publications, prizes, performances or other awards you have received</li> </ul> <p>If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the University's minimum English language requirements (below).</p> <p><em>As an international research-intensive university, we welcome students from all walks of life and from across the world. Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study in the School of History is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid. Some schools and faculties have a higher requirement.
