IDEA, the Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre, part of the School of Philosophy, Religion and History &amp; Philosophy of Science (PRHS) at the University of Leeds, is pleased to announce two special PhD Scholarships. <br /> <br /> IDEA is the Applied Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds, a department within PRHS which specialises in professional and applied ethics. Colleagues in IDEA have extensive teaching and research interests, and they carry out effective consultancy and training in many sectors where ethical issues arise. IDEA will be 20 years old in 2025/26, and to celebrate it will be offering two 20th Anniversary PhD Scholarships.<br />

<h2 class="heading hide-accessible"Full description</h2>

<p>Each Scholarship will last for three years and will cover all fees, at the level of Home (i.e. UK) students, and will also include student maintenance. PhD students will be expected to start in October 2025. Students must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds while in receipt of this scholarship. They will join the vibrant PhD and research community of philosophers based at the University of Leeds. </p> <p>IDEA covers all areas and many specific topics in applied and professional ethics, including (but not limited to) the ethics of:</p> <ul> <li>AI, data and technology</li> <li>biomedical and healthcare</li> <li>environment and climate change</li> <li>leadership and persuasion    </li> <li>love, sex and relationships</li> </ul> <p>plus many other topics within political ethics, normative ethics and moral psychology.</p> <p>More details of research themes and staff interests are available here: <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/ethics-research-innovation">https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/ethics-research-innovation</a>. You may find it beneficial to contact a member of IDEA faculty before you make your application to discuss your proposed project.</p> <p><strong>Deadlines</strong></p> <p>The deadline to be considered for the IDEA scholarship is 22nd January 2025.</p> <p>However, before you can apply, you will need to have already secured your place on a course and have your 9-digit student identification number. Therefore, we advise you to apply for a place on the PhD at least 6 weeks before the scholarship deadline, and we also recommend that you should be in dialogue with potential supervisors prior to this to discuss your proposals. </p>

<h2 class="heading hide-accessible">Faculty information</h2>

<p><strong>Duration of the Award</strong></p> <ul> <li>Full-time (3.5 years) or part-time (5 years and 10 months).</li> <li>The award will be made for one year in the first instance and will renew each year of your programme, subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Funding</strong></p> <ul> <li>Full Fees for 3 years, or 5 years for part-time applicants.</li> <li>Maintenance for 3 years and 6 months (or 5 years and 10 months for part-time applicants).</li> <li>In session 2024/25 the maintenance stipend covered £19,237 for full-time study. The part-time rate is calculated pro-rata at 60%. This amount increases per annum in line with the Research Council UK rate.</li> <li>Please be aware that any expenses related to relocation to the UK (visa, insurance, NHS fees, flights, etc) would be their responsibility and is not covered by this award.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Other Conditions</strong></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.</li> <li>Awards must be taken up by 1st October 2025.</li> <li>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship.</li> </ul>

<h2 class="heading">How to apply</h2>

<p><strong>Stage 1</strong></p> <p>First, apply for a research place of study, through the <a href="https://prod.banner.leeds.ac.uk/ssb/bwskalog_uol.P_DispLoginNon">online application form</a> by 22<sup>nd</sup> January 2025. Please state clearly that the funding you wish to be considered for is the “IDEA 20<sup>th</sup> Anniversary Scholarships”. You will be expected to meet our <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/ethics-research-degrees/doc/doctor-philosophy-phd-5">eligibility criteria </a>for PhD candidates. In order to be considered for the Scholarship you must submit all the required <a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/ethics-research-degrees/doc/apply-15">supporting documents</a> for your application for PhD study.</p> <p>Any study applications that are not accompanied by the documents requested by the deadline will not be considered for the award.</p> <p>Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.</p> <p><strong>Stage 2</strong></p> <p>Apply for the IDEA 20th Anniversary Scholarships by completing the online<a href="https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/idea-20-th-anniversary-scholarships"> Scholarship Application Form</a>. You must submit your scholarship application by <strong>5pm UK time 22<sup>nd</sup> January 2025.</strong></p> <ul> <li>Please note that an unsuccessful application for this scholarship does not exclude you from applying for other research study opportunities or scholarships offered by the University of Leeds. </li> <li>Please note that, due to the large volume of applications, the University of Leeds will not enter into any correspondence regarding the progress of an application until the outcome is known. </li> <li>If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the minimum English language requirements (below). </li> </ul> <p><em>As an international research-intensive university, we welcome students from all walks of life and from across the world. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Master's degree. Applicants are advised to check with the relevant School prior to making an application. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
