School of Law Doctoral Scholarship

Two full scholarships are available in the School of Law to prospective UK Postgraduate researchers who wish to commence study for the PhD in the academic year 2025/26. These scholarships are open to UK applicants only and provide full UK fees with a tax-free maintenance allowance that matches UKRI rates (currently &pound;19,237 in 2024/25) which rises annually in line with UKRI rates. These scholarships are open to full-time or part-time UK candidates who have been offered a place on a PhD degree at the School of Law.<br /> <br /> The School of Law is an outstanding place to study. We have been consistently ranked amongst the top 10 UK law schools. The last REF found that 88% of our research is either world-leading or internationally excellent and placed us 4th in the UK for overall research impact. Our School is comprised of four research centres: the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, the Centre for Law &amp; Social Justice, the Centre for Business Law and Practice, and the Centre for Innovation and Research in Legal Education. <br /> <br /> Supporting PhD study is central to our identity. We have a vibrant and inclusive community of around 100 postgraduate researchers within the School. Students who are already registered for PhD research study are excluded from applying</p> </li> <li> <p>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship</p> </li> </ul>

<p><strong>Stage 1</strong></p> <p>First, apply for a research place of study, through the <a href="https://studentservices.leeds.ac.uk/pls/banprod/bwskalog_uol.P_DispLoginNon">online application form</a>. Please state clearly that the funding you wish to be considered for is “The School of Law Doctoral Scholarship”. You will be expected to meet <a href="https://essl.leeds.ac.uk/law-research-degrees/doc/entry-requirements-1">our eligibility criteria</a> for PHD candidates.</p> <p>In order to be considered for the Studentship you must submit all the <a href="https://essl.leeds.ac.uk/law-research-degrees/doc/apply">required supporting documents</a> for your application for PhD study.</p> <p><br /> Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.</p> <p><strong>Stage 2</strong><br /> <br /> Apply for the School of Law Doctoral Scholarship by completing the <a href="https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/school-of-law-doctoral-scholarship-2024-25-duplicate">Scholarship Application Form</a>. Applicants to this scholarship in the School of Law should normally have a first-class Undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) AND/OR a Distinction (or predicted Distinction) in their Masters degree (both in an appropriate discipline). Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

The minimum English language entry requirement for postgraduate research study in the School of Law is an IELTS of 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
