Two Doctoral Scholarships are available for UK and International students for postgraduate research study in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures.<br /> <br /> The awards cover full tuition fees and a maintenance grant matching UKRI rates (which was GBP 19,237 in Session 2024/2025). <br /> <br /> These research scholarships are available for 3.5 years full-time or 5 years 10 months part-time study. Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship, as they would be expected to regularly attend campus for in-person supervision meetings, tutorials, and other events and training. <br /> <br /> These fully funded PhD places provide an exciting opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in a range of fields within arts, humanities and culture. The Faculty is home to a thriving, collaborative and international facing group of academic experts, who work with a variety of external partners: industry, charities, schools, social enterprises, local council, etc. <br /> <br /> The Faculty of Arts Humanities and Culture invites applications from prospective postgraduate researchers who wish to commence study for a PhD in the academic year 2025/26. The award is open to full-time or part-time candidates who have been offered a place on a PhD degree at a school within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Culture. (Please note that only UK applicants may apply to study part-time with this funding. International applicants may apply for full-time study only). <br /> <br /> Please also note these scholarships are not available to distance learning candidates.

<h2 class="heading hide-accessible"Full description</h2>

<p>The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures hosts postgraduate researchers (PGRs) involved in a broad range of projects – from those that focus on single concepts or multidisciplinary projects that seek to address global challenges and sustainable development.</p> <p>Due to our close relations across all Faculties within the University, collaborative projects can be proposed that are between schools within the Faculty or across the University. Close relationships have existed between all schools in the Faculty, but also across the University for example with the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Leeds University Business School and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.</p> <p>Please take a look at our<a href="https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk"> Graduate School website</a> with links to all the schools within the Faculty to see the range of research and expertise. The successful applicant will become a member of the Leeds Doctoral College where the research journey and experience will be supported through dedicated training about research methods and approaches and help with access to a wide range of issues such as wellbeing, the Library, the students’ union and the Language Centre. </p> <p><u><strong>Information about the Award</strong></u></p> <p>These Doctoral Scholarships are for students seeking a scholarship to support their PhD studies within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. The Faculty will consider applications from students seeking to undertake PhD study through any of the following programmes. </p> <ul> <li>Doctoral Research within one School </li> <li>Doctoral Research across two Schools (Interdisciplinary)</li> </ul> <p><strong>Duration of the Award</strong></p> <ul> <li>Full-time (3 years and 6 months) or part-time (5 years and 10 months).</li> <li>The award will be made for one year in the first instance and will renew each year of your programme, subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Funding</strong></p> <ul> <li>Full Fees for 3 years, or 5 years for part-time applicants.</li> <li>Maintenance for 3 years and 6 months (or 5 years and 10 months for part-time applicants).</li> <li>In session 2024/25 the maintenance stipend covered £19,237 for full-time study. The part-time rate is calculated pro-rata at 60%. This amount increases per annum in line with the Research Council UK rate.</li> <li>Please be aware that any expenses related to the relocation of international students to the UK (visa, insurance, NHS fees, flights, etc) would be their responsibility and is not covered by this award.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Other Conditions</strong></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.</li> <li>Awards must be taken up by 1st October 2025.</li> <li>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship, as they would be expected to regularly attend campus for in-person supervision meetings, tutorials, and other events and training.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Deadlines</strong></p> <p>The deadline to be considered for the Scholarship is<strong> 17:00 (UK time) on 14<sup>th</sup> March 2025.</strong></p> <p>However, before you can apply, you will need to have already secured your place on a course and have your 9 digit student identification number. Therefore, we advise you to apply for a place on the PhD at least 6 weeks before the scholarship deadline, and we also recommend that you should be in dialogue with potential supervisors prior to this to discuss your proposals. </p>

<h2 class="heading">How to apply</h2>

<p><u><strong>Stage 1</strong></u></p> <p>First, apply for a research place of study, through the <a href="http://studentservices.leeds.ac.uk/pls/banprod/bwskalog_uol.P_DispLoginNon">online application form</a>. Please state clearly that the funding you wish to be considered for is “The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures Doctoral Scholarship”. You will be expected to meet our eligibility criteria for PHD candidates (please refer to<a href="http://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/"> each School website</a> for specific information).</p> <p>In order to be considered for the Studentship you must submit all the required supporting documents for your application for PhD study. For application to PhD study, it is important to develop a well considered research proposal and the Doctoral College provides useful advice on <a href="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/research-applying/doc/research-proposals">how to write a research proposal </a>on their website.  </p> <p>Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.</p> <p><u><strong>Stage 2</strong></u></p> <p>Apply for “The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures Doctoral Scholarship” by completing the <a href="https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/arts-humanities-and-cultures-doctoral-scholarship-2025-26">Scholarship Application Form</a>. You must submit your scholarship application by <strong>17:00 p.m. (UK time) on Friday 14<sup>th</sup> March 2025.</strong></p> <p><strong>Please be prepared to provide the below information within the scholarship application form:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Your personal details (full name, student ID, email address and fee status)</li> <li>Information about your previous qualifications (programme title, start and end dates, final grade) </li> <li>Information about your previous employment (names of previous employers, your job title, start and end dates, and duties/responsibilities) </li> <li>Any publications, prizes, performances or other awards you have received</li> <li>Explanation of how your previous academic / professional achievements demonstrate your potential and ability to complete your proposed project</li> <li>Information about your proposed research, including:  your research title, research objectives, the significance of your research in your discipline, and the methods you intend to use</li> </ul> <p>If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the University's minimum English language requirements (below).</p> <p><em>As an international research-intensive university, we welcome students from all walks of life and from across the world. <h2 class="heading heading--sm">Entry requirements</h2>

Applicants to research degree programmes should normally have at least a first class or an upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. The criteria for entry for some research degrees may be higher, for example, several faculties, also require a Masters degree. Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

<h2 class="heading heading--sm">English language requirements</h2>

The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate study in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent (some Schools do have a higher requirement – please check your relevant School webpages). The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
