Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Education or Childhood 2023/24 (International)

This fully-funded PhD place provides an exciting opportunity to pursue your own postgraduate research in a range of fields relating to education and/or childhood.<br /> <br /> The School of Education invites applications from prospective postgraduate researchers who wish to commence study for a PhD in the academic year 2023-2024 for the School of Education Postgraduate Research Scholarship.<br /> <br /> The award is open to full-time candidates who have been offered a place on a PhD degree at the School of Education. We especially welcome applications that connect to the School core research areas of language education; inclusion, childhood and youth; digital education; curriculum, pedagogy and policy.<br /> <br /> The value of the award is equivalent to the cost of tuition fees for 2023-2024 plus an annual stipend matching UKRI rates (GBP 17,668 in 2022-23).<br />

Our PhD students are encouraged to get involved in a range of academic events, social events, networks and societies. We provide a range of leadership, teaching, and presenting opportunities alongside your research to ensure our postgraduate researchers have the opportunity to develop a range of skills above and beyond their research.</p> <p>We are offering one full-time PhD scholarship for one International candidate. This covers tuition fees for three years and a maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate (&pound;17,668 in 2022-23), subject to satisfactory progress. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive study experience and we welcome applications from all suitably-qualified candidates.</p> <h2><strong>Research Areas</strong></h2> <p>Your research project should be linked to one of these areas:</p> <p><strong>Inclusion, Childhood and Youth</strong>. This could include:</p> <ul> <li>Children&rsquo;s experiences of poverty or disadvantage</li> <li>Research alongside marginalised families and/or children</li> <li>International perspectives on childhood or youth</li> <li>Health and wellbeing of children and young people</li> <li>Special educational needs and disability</li> <li>Participatory methods with children and young people</li> </ul> <p><strong>Language Education.</strong> This could include:</p> <ul> <li>Migration and displacement of peoples</li> <li>Academic literacies</li> <li>Teaching methodologies</li> <li>Language learning with new technologies</li> </ul> <p><strong>Digital Education.</strong> This could include:</p> <ul> <li>Hybrid/blended learning</li> <li>Virtual learning environments</li> <li>Learning analytics</li> <li>Lifelong learning utilising digital technologies</li> <li>Use of technology in the classroom</li> </ul> <p><strong>Curriculum, Pedagogy and Policy.</strong> This could include:</p> <ul> <li>Development of curricula</li> <li>Assessment in formal education</li> <li>Evidence informed policy and practice</li> <li>Teacher wellbeing</li> <li>A particular focus on science, maths, literacy and language</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Information about the Award</strong></p> <ul> <li>We are offering 1 full-time PHD scholarship in the School of Education for one international candidate, matching UKRI maintenance stipend (currently &pound;17,668 in 2022/23) and international tuition fees for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.&nbsp;</li> </ul> <p><strong>Duration of the Award</strong></p> <ul> <li>Full-time (3 years). The award will be made for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further period of up to two years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Other Conditions</strong></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.</li> <li>Awards must be taken up by 1st October 2023.</li> <li>Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this scholarship.<br /> &nbsp;</li> </ul>

You will be expected to meet our eligibility criteria for PHD candidates. Applicants to this scholarship in the School of Education should normally have a First class Undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) AND/ OR a Distinction (or predicted Distinction) in their Masters degree (both in an appropriate discipline). Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for a particular research degree are advised to contact the School or Graduate School prior to making an application.

The minimum English language entry requirement for postgraduate research study in the School of Education is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
